Minutes to Decimal Chart (0-59 Minutes)

Look up any minute value from 0 to 59, or convert a longer total such as 410 minutes. The chart gives three decimal places for exact pay and the two-place figure most payroll forms use.

How to use the chart

Find the minutes on the time card in the left column and read the decimal across. For 7 hours 37 minutes, take the 37-minute value (0.617 or 0.62 rounded) and add it to 7 for 7.62 hours. If you have a long list of minutes rather than hours and minutes, convert the total with the calculator above: 410 minutes is 410 ÷ 60 = 6.83 hours, or 6:50.

decimal hours = minutes ÷ 60

Worked example: a week of minutes

Five shifts of minutes, $17.50 an hour

An employee has these paid minutes: 485, 492, 510, 478, 465. The total is 2,430 minutes. 2,430 ÷ 60 = 40.5 hours (40:30). Federal overtime starts after 40 hours in a workweek, so 0.5 hour is overtime. Pay = 40 × $17.50 + 0.5 × $26.25 = $700.00 + $13.13 = $713.13 (rounded to the cent).

Tenth-of-an-hour (6-minute) shortcut

Some time clocks record time in tenths of an hour. Each 6 minutes is 0.1, so 12 minutes is 0.2, 18 is 0.3, 30 is 0.5, 42 is 0.7, 54 is 0.9. Because 6 does not divide into every minute value, punches are usually rounded to the nearest 6 minutes first. The rounding page explains the effect.

Converting a long list of minutes

When a system records durations as minutes (phone logs, delivery apps, project trackers), it is easier to add the minutes first and divide once. Example: 95, 140, 75 and 120 minutes total 430 minutes; 430 ÷ 60 = 7.17 hours, or 7:10. The same list converted line by line and rounded to two places (1.58 + 2.33 + 1.25 + 2.00) gives 7.16, one hundredth less, because of the rounding of each line.

Reading minutes the way payroll does

Payroll forms that ask for hours in decimals expect the minutes part to be a fraction of an hour, not a count of minutes. A time card entry of 7 hours 12 minutes becomes 7.20 (12 ÷ 60 = 0.20), which is easy to confuse with 7.12. The cleanest habit is to convert only at the end: total the hours and minutes, then convert once using the chart or the calculator. If you routinely work in 6-minute increments, each increment is exactly one tenth of an hour, which is why some time clocks use them.

Frequently asked questions

What is 30 minutes in decimal?

0.5 hours.

What is 15 minutes in decimal?

0.25 hours.

What is 45 minutes as a decimal?

0.75 hours.

How do I convert 410 minutes to hours?
