How this was calculated
The formula
For a standard full-time year, divide by 2,080 (40 × 52). A $52,000 salary is exactly $25.00 an hour. The shortcut: take off three zeros and halve it (52,000 → 52 → 26, close to $25).
Worked examples
$62,000 salary, 40 hours
$62,000 ÷ 2,080 = $29.81 per hour (29.8077 before rounding).
Same $62,000, but a 50-hour week
Hours per year = 50 × 52 = 2,600. $62,000 ÷ 2,600 = $23.85. Working ten extra hours a week lowers the effective hourly pay by about $5.96, which is why the true hours matter when you compare job offers.
$60,000 with two unpaid weeks
Paid weeks = 50, so $60,000 ÷ (40 × 50) = $30.00 per hour.
Quick table (40 hours, 52 weeks)
| Salary | Hourly | Bi-weekly check | Semi-monthly check | Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $30,000 | $14.42 | $1,154 | $1,250 | $2,500 |
| $40,000 | $19.23 | $1,538 | $1,667 | $3,333 |
| $50,000 | $24.04 | $1,923 | $2,083 | $4,167 |
| $60,000 | $28.85 | $2,308 | $2,500 | $5,000 |
| $75,000 | $36.06 | $2,885 | $3,125 | $6,250 |
| $100,000 | $48.08 | $3,846 | $4,167 | $8,333 |
Things that make the hourly figure misleading
- Unpaid overtime. If you are an exempt salaried employee you may work more than 40 hours without extra pay. If you are non-exempt, you are owed overtime. See exempt vs non-exempt.
- Benefits. Health insurance, retirement matching and paid leave are not in the salary figure.
- Taxes. Everything here is gross. Use the paycheck estimator for take-home pay.
Using the result to compare offers
Suppose you are comparing two offers for the same 45-hour week. Offer A is a $58,000 salary: $58,000 ÷ (45 × 52 = 2,340 hours) = $24.79 an hour. Offer B is $26 an hour with overtime for non-exempt staff: 40 × $26 + 5 × $39 = $1,235 a week, or $64,220 over 52 weeks. For the same hours, B pays about $6,220 more, and its hourly rate is higher on every hour worked. Looking only at the headline salary would not show that. This is the comparison the calculator makes easy.
Salary history, raises and the hourly rate
A 3% raise on $62,000 is $1,860, which adds $0.89 an hour at 2,080 hours. If your hours grow at the same time, the effective gain can disappear. Enter your real weekly hours each time you compare.

A step-by-step conversion you can do on paper
- Write the annual salary: $48,000.
- Work out the hours you really work in a year: 42 hours × 52 weeks = 2,184.
- Divide: $48,000 ÷ 2,184 = $21.98 an hour. At exactly 40 hours (2,080) it would be $23.08.
- Subtract any unpaid weeks first, if you have them: with 3 unpaid weeks, 42 × 49 = 2,058 hours and the rate is $23.32.
The difference between $21.98 and $23.08 for the same salary is the reason to enter your true hours.
Salary to hourly in different pay periods
A salary is often communicated as a pay period amount rather than an annual figure. To convert a bi-weekly check to an hourly rate, divide by the hours in the two weeks: $1,800 ÷ 80 = $22.50. For a semi-monthly check of $2,000, multiply by 24 for the annual salary ($48,000) and divide by 2,080 for $23.08. For a monthly figure, multiply by 12. The calculator above uses the annual amount so that every case uses the same method.
Rounding and the final answer
An hourly rate derived from a salary rarely divides evenly, so you will see cents that repeat: $62,000 ÷ 2,080 = $29.8077. Employers who convert salaries usually round to the nearest cent for display but keep the exact figure for payroll. When you compare offers, compare the unrounded numbers or the annual totals.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year, usually 2,080 for full time.
What is $50,000 a year per hour?
$50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 per hour at 40 hours a week.
What is $100,000 a year per hour?
