The answer
Forty-five hours is nine hours a day for five days: a one-hour paid-or-unpaid lunch decides whether it is 40 or 45. This schedule is 112.5% of a 40-hour week and counts as above full-time work.
How the hours break down
| Measure | Hours |
|---|---|
| Per week | 45 |
| Per bi-weekly period | 90 |
| Per semi-monthly period (average) | 97.5 |
| Per month (average) | 195 |
| Per quarter | 585 |
| Per year (52 weeks) | 2340 |
Spread over a 5-day week that is 9 hours a day; over a 4-day week 11.25 hours a day; over 3 days 15 hours a day.
Worked example
45 hours a week at $20 an hour
Weekly gross = 40 h × $20 + 5 h × $30 = $950.00. Annual = $950.00 × 52 = $49,400.00. Two unpaid weeks would remove $1,900.00, leaving $47,500.00.
Pay at common hourly rates
| Hourly rate | Weekly | 52 weeks | 50 weeks (2 unpaid) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15.00/h | $712.50 | $37,050.00 | $35,625.00 |
| $20.00/h | $950.00 | $49,400.00 | $47,500.00 |
| $25.00/h | $1,187.50 | $61,750.00 | $59,375.00 |
| $30.00/h | $1,425.00 | $74,100.00 | $71,250.00 |
All figures are gross, before taxes, and include federal overtime pay for hours above 40 in each week.
If you have unpaid time off
| Scenario | Hours per year | Hours per month |
|---|---|---|
| Paid all 52 weeks | 2340 h | 195 h |
| 2 unpaid weeks | 2250 h | 187.5 h |
| 4 unpaid weeks | 2160 h | 180 h |
Overtime
Over 40 hours a week, federal overtime applies to non-exempt employees: 40 regular hours plus 5 overtime hours each week. At $20 an hour that is $950.00 a week instead of $900.00 at straight time, a premium of $50.00 a week or $2,600.00 over 52 weeks. See overtime rules and the calculator for state differences.
